Eye emergencies include cuts, scratches, objects in the eye, burns, chemical exposure, and blunt injuries to the eye or eyelid. Certain eye infections and other medical conditions, such as blood clots or even eye conditions such as glaucoma may also need medical care right away. Since the eye is easily damaged, any of these conditions can lead to vision loss if left untreated.
Examples of true eye emergencies that require immediate medical attention are:
- Retinal Detachment – Symptoms an increase of floaters, flashes of light and problems with your vision that result in gradual loses in vision.
- Central Retinal Artery Occlusion – Symptoms include a sudden, painless loss of vision, this could be what we call a CRAO, or Central Retinal Artery Occlusion. The central retinal artery with rare exception, provides the retina with oxygen and if deprived for too long of its supply, will result in permanent blindness.
- Chemical injury – This injury results when chemical products such as cleaning supplies, chemicals, garden chemicals get inti the eye.
- Small foreign object – Even something small such dust or sand can get into the eye and cause irritation.
- Large foreign object – If a larger object such as glass, or metal gets into your eye, it can cause major damage. In this case DO NOT attempt it remove it and contact and immediate care.
